Attracting the perfect Audience Member –

Cross-media production target audience: A fun, loving 16-25-year-old mass market audience.

-          My audience member would listen to mainstream and current pop music which would reflect my video’s narrative and performative nature.

-          They would have a genuine interest in music and possibly even play an instrument as, within the song ‘Waves’ the guitar is extremely prevalent to the melody as well as the vocals which would therefore target a musical person as well as those who listen for enjoyment. Also my video will include a guitar which will therefore be interesting to them.

-          My audience member would wear quite casual, loose, flowing clothes which are reminiscent of the movement of the sea which implies that they are constantly moving from place to place – restless. I would like to include this sense of restlessness in my video through changing locations and movement.

-          Their clothes would be the colour blue. This relates to the title of the song ‘waves’ as well as emphasising their connection to the sea. This suggests that they help the balance of the world, like the tide. And in my video I will be including the sea and waves

-          My audience member would be age 21 – therefore they can relate to the more serious themes within love that the song addresses whilst still having the energy which accompanies youth. And I want to portray a 17 year old in my video which they will be able to relate to through their youthful qualities.

-          My audience member would not live with their parents but instead with their friends. This highlights their desire for change and to move as well as independence which suggests that they face many difficulties on their own. – Therefore, they can understand lyrics and message of song. In my music video I will include shots of my protagonist alone in the frame to highlight independence.

-          My audience member would compete in long distance running. This further represents their desire to move and accomplish but also their content with themselves and being alone with their thoughts suggesting a maturity which is also shown within the song’s lyrics. I may include a running shot of them on the beach, if not they will be jumping into the water.

-          My audience member would eat a variety of snacks because they are constantly on the move. This will be portrayed through my music video through the use of different locations which will suggest a rapidness to the characters movements.

-          My audience’s gender, although could be male due to the artist being male and so therefore a male audience would be able to relate with him, would be female. This is because they would be attracted to the vocals and the message as well as being challenged and see the other point of view in a relationship. Also my protagonist in the video will be female so therefore the female gender will be able to relate to them.  

-          My audience member would have a big group of friends and many other friendships in other places. This further highlights their movement and that they have met many people as well as presenting them as loving and loved by others. As the main theme in the song is love then they can easily understand the emotions associated with it. I want to show different kinds of love and connections within my music video which will make the narrative more emotive for my audience.

-          Although financially stable my audience member wouldn’t be extremely privileged so therefore they would not take things for granted and therefore appreciate life and all that it offers more. As a result in my music video I want to show simple signs of kindness rather than big gestures which would present the sense of perfect happiness simply.

-          They would generally wear comfortable shoes, designed to be easily walked in, for example trainers, which will allow them to travel and move wherever they desire. My characters costume will also consist of comfortable shoes they will reflect reality and normality for more to relate to.

-          The audience member would enjoy to read and immerse themselves in someone else’s story. This highlights a need for knowledge and new experiences – therefore the lyric:

‘The freedom, of falling
A feeling I thought was set in stone
It slips through, my fingers
I'm trying hard to let go’ would be easily identifiable with the audience member as they would understand the desperation for freedom and the difficulties that accompany holding on to it. I want to create this sense of freedom in my video through the use of slow-motion.

-          Despite not living with their parents, however, my audience member would be constantly moving back and forth to visit them as well as their grandparents. This implies a complete love as well as conveying the sense that they are like the tide – constantly moving in and out, always returning home, to land but always wanting to explore the unknown. I will include shots of the sea that will be reminiscent to this audience member.

-          My audience member would also be comfortable on the sea and would also enjoy travelling by boat and being at one with the movement of the waves, therefore relating to the title: ‘Waves’. Therefore the shots of the sea would appeal to them.

-          Also, my audience member would be interested in exhilarating sports such as surfing, horse riding as well as rollercoaster rides. This shows their need for excitement, fun and speed which is controlled by something other than themselves. As a result, this highlights their inability to live without the influence of other beings and forces. Therefore, this underlines the lyrics of the song being based around uncontrolled emotions. And I want to present the video with this same exhilarating atmosphere.

-          My audience member would also be appreciative of talent and as the artist can play the guitar as well as sing they would recognise this. Therefore a guitar within the video will highlight the artists talent and is reminiscent of live performances as well as the production stage.

-          They would have wavy, but trimmed hair which further shows their relationship with the sea as well as their need to change. I would like my protagonist to have similar hair.

-      My video will also attract my perfect viewer as it will tell a narrative about 2 sisters and the 21 year-old would have a younger sister so as a result nostalgia will be created.
